Bowes Castle

The massive ruins of Henry II's 12thC tower keep, set within the earthworks of a Roman fort guarding the strategic Stainmore Pass over the Pennines.

The Bowes Museum houses a collection of outstanding European fine and decorative arts and offers an acclaimed exhibition programme, alongside special events and children's activities.

Bowes Railway

Preserved colliery railway system featuring the world's only preserved operational rope-hauled railway. Extensive workshops and colliery buildings may also be visited.

Bowlees Picnic Area

The picnic area is in a sheltered side valley of Teesdale. There are 4 waterfalls in the site and more falls alongside a footpath to Gibson's Cave.

Bowlees Visitor Centre

Visitor centre housed in a Methodist chapel. Natural history displays which include geology, landscape, archaeology, flora, vegetation and wildlife.
